Ernest Gimson (1864–1919) – an influential figure in the British Arts and Crafts movement, combining architecture, interior decoration, furniture design and craftsmanship into a unified philosophy of design. Working initially in London before establishing workshops in the Cotswolds, he became renowned for furniture distinguished by its exceptional craftsmanship, restrained simplicity and respect for traditional materials and techniques. Through his workshops at Sapperton, Gimson helped revive rural craft traditions while producing furniture, interiors, architectural fittings and metalwork of outstanding quality. His influence extended well beyond his lifetime, establishing standards of craftsmanship that shaped British furniture and interior design throughout the twentieth century.
