Sir Gordon Russell

Sir Gordon Russell MC CBE RDI (1892–1980) was a British furniture designer, manufacturer and industrial designer whose career combined commercial furniture production with public service. Combining traditional craftsmanship with modern industrial production, he played a leading role in shaping British furniture design before and after the Second World War. Through Gordon Russell Ltd., his work for the Utility Furniture Scheme, and his leadership of the Council of Industrial Design, he became one of the principal advocates of good design in Britain. His furniture is recognised for its simplicity, craftsmanship and functional elegance, and his influence extended across furniture design, industrial design and design education.
