JOHN MAKEPEACE

In addition to being a highly regarded furniture designer and maker, John Makepeace OBE fundamentally changed the way furniture design is taught, researched and practised in Britain.

His furniture combines exceptional craftsmanship with engineering innovation often exploring the structural capabilities of timber by integrating traditional cabinet-making with advanced materials science. Throughout his career he has advocated that furniture should be
intellectually engaging as well as beautifully made.

Perhaps his greatest legacy lies in education. Through founding the School for Craftsmen in Wood (later Parnham College) he inspired generations of designer-makers who have gone on to become leading exponents of this craft internationally.
