Sir Terence Conran occupies a unique place in the history of British design. Although remembered by many as the founder of Habitat and later The Conran Shop, his lasting significance lies in transforming the way ordinary people furnished and lived in their homes. More than any other British designer of the post-war period, he made good design accessible, affordable and desirable for a mass audience. His furniture and interiors combined modernism with warmth, practicality and comfort, replacing the heavy, formal interiors of the 1950s with lighter, informal living environments. Conran believed that “good design improves the quality of life,” a principle that guided every aspect of his work.
